CTRL gallery is pleased to present The Classical, a solo exhibition of new work by Heimir Björgúlfsson.
In his new collage works, Björgúlfsson transforms photographs taken as records of his varying environment. One reality punctuates another, creating impossible scenarios.
Cacti are arranged in a mountain landscape, mineral ore floats above the sea, city trash, with striking sculptural qualities, interrupts an untouched mountainous desert and glacial ice hangs from swamp trees like otherworldly cocoons.
Through this process of dissecting, layering and obscuring, a certain order emerges. Björgúlfsson's immaculate sense of design is mapped onto landscapes, which are interrupted by other landscapes, or by alternate views of the same place.
Ultimately, Björgúlfsson finds beauty in the conflation of the exotic with the mundane. Or more accurately, he makes the argument that the qualities of being exotic or mundane are ultimately a matter of perspective.
Björgúlfsson is represented by CTRL gallery, Houston, Western Project, LA, Rebecca Ibel Gallery, Columbus, and Barbara Seiler Galerie, Zurich. Recent exhibitions include "Coloursynthesis", Reykjavík Art Museum, Iceland, "Open Light in Private Spaces: Biennale for International Light Art", Ruhr, Germany, "walrus knuckles ash trigger", Western Project, LA, "No End To It", Rebecca Ibel Gallery & "One & Only", Barbara Seiler Galerie.
